Sora Turbo
by OpenAI·USA·Released
OpenAI's text-to-video model — up to 20-second 1080p clips.
About this model
Sora Turbo is OpenAI's production text-to-video model — released to ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers in December 2024. The 'Turbo' name distinguishes it from the original Sora research preview from February 2024; Turbo is the speed-optimised variant that actually ships to users.
Sora Turbo generates clips up to 20 seconds long at resolutions up to 1080p. The model is accessible via the Sora app at sora.com — there's no general-purpose API, though enterprise customers can access it via OpenAI's enterprise sales channel.
Compared to competitors (Veo 2, Runway Gen-4, Kling) Sora Turbo tends to win on physical coherence and complex multi-shot scenes, while losing slightly on raw aesthetic polish and consistency between separate generations.
Strengths
- •Strong physical coherence — objects behave plausibly under camera motion
- •Multi-shot scene support with consistent characters
- •Storyboard feature in the Sora app for sequencing generations
- •Included in ChatGPT Plus / Pro subscriptions (no per-clip fee for Plus tier limits)
Limitations
- •No general-purpose API for individual developers
- •Max 20-second clips — shorter than some competitors
- •Aesthetic consistency between separate clips remains imperfect
- •Mandatory visible watermark on outputs
When to use it
- →Short-form social video (TikTok, Reels, Shorts)
- →Concept videos and storyboards for film pre-production
- →Marketing video generation
- →Educational explainer content
Architecture & training
OpenAI's Sora technical report describes the model as a diffusion-transformer operating on patches of video — 'spacetime patches' analogous to language tokens. Training data sources have not been fully disclosed, which has been a subject of ongoing legal scrutiny. The Turbo variant is a distilled / optimised version of the research-quality Sora model with reduced compute requirements per generation.
